Maximize Your Health with a sauna

We’re obviously huge advocates of infrared saunas here at Primal Health & Wellness Center as both my husband and I have been avid sauna users for years. Regular infrared sauna use has proven benefits – including reducing hypertension, improving detoxification, minimizing stress, and weight loss. We would add improved respiratory health, especially by combining salt inhalation.

Saunas have been a part of traditional medicine for many centuries with good reason. Physically, nothing is more reinvigorating than a deep, healthy sweat every day. Tension fades. Muscles unwind. Mentally, we emerge relaxed, revived and ready for whatever the day may bring.

Saunas were introduced to the world by the people of Finland in 1112 AD. Known for their healing properties, the ancient Finnish people sat in an enclosed space filled with air heated by stones in a fire for extended periods of time. At times they would drip water on the rocks to create steam, later sand and steam baths would be created, and as the technology changed and evolved, more health benefits became unlocked. What started as tradition, quickly turned into an invaluable tool in the health and relaxation of people around the world. The evolution of technology has resulted in the most beneficial sauna yet –the Infrared Sauna.

A few minutes a day is all it takes to look and feel better. The body’s response to gentle, persistent heat is well-documented and proven day in and out by people all over the world. Which is why more and more doctors are recommending its purifying benefits.

WHY INFRARED (AND NOT TRADITIONAL)

Infrared saunas are a more modern spin on the traditional sauna experience. Instead of using humidity, Infrared saunas emit a wavelength of light that your body absorbs without heating up the air around you. This absorption starts that same cooling process without having to steam you in the process. A traditional high-heat sauna can be as hot as 220 degrees and most people simply cannot tolerate such heat for a long period of time. The temperatures in an infrared sauna are typically 100-150 degrees, a much more tolerable (some would even say comfortable) temperature. Science has also shown that these temperatures and this environment encourage a more efficient shedding of toxic material in the body, as evidence in the reduced amount of water in the perspiration and an increased amount of toxins. The resonant absorption experienced in an infrared sauna has also shown to increase the amount of toxins excreted by the liver, kidneys, and even hair.

A great example of how this works:

Imagine it is a chilly but sunny winter day. You’re bundled up and you can feel the air around you is cold, but when you stand directly in the sun, you can feel the warmth. The sun is able to warm you without warming the air around you. This is FIR at work.

DO INFRARED SAUNAS EMIT EMF?

Electromagnetic fields (EMF) can be emitted from many forms of technology, such as power lines, home wiring, airport and military radar, substations, transformers, cell phones and many appliances. If received in significant doses, EMF have been found to be detrimental to your health. Electricity is part of our daily lives but it’s smart to use caution when exposing ourselves to higher levels of EMF.

Radiant Health Saunas® have been used by a variety of medical doctors, naturopaths, massage therapists, homeopaths, herbalists, acupuncturists, chiropractors, and other specialists since 1997. As awareness of the potential effects of EMF has grown, they have responded by bringing their EMF levels to a very low level (exceeding Swedish Standards) – averaging 0.3 milligauss at point of body contact. They have also brought the Extemely Low Frequency (ELF) Electrical Field (EF) levels below Swedish standards as well, so that anyone can enjoy a healthy infrared experience.

Since your health is our first priority, it is crucial to our company to make sure that our saunas are completely non toxic. The heaters and all the materials used inside our saunas have been independently tested showing they are completely non toxic. (measuring zero VOC’S – volatile organic compounds). We display this third party verification in each sauna room for full disclosure.

4 steps to a great sauna detox

Now that you know the health benefits of infrared sauna use, do you know how to use an infrared sauna to properly detox? While every body is different, we found a few things to be helpful.

1. HYDRATE

Each day you are planning to use the sauna, make sure your water intake increases. While far infrared sauna detoxification isn’t harsh, you are still sweating – some much more than others. The sweat produced in a far infrared sauna is 80 – 85% water, so it is important that before, during, and after your sauna detox session, you drink plenty of water to re-hydrate.

2. SET TIME LIMITS

The amount of time spent in a sauna detox session may vary depending upon your tolerance and daily activity level. To get your body accustomed to infrared therapy, start with 15-20 minute sessions every third day. Gradually increase towards 30 sessions in the optimal temperature range every other day. Listen to your body. and be aware of excessive detoxifying. Consult a medical provider if you have any doubt of your ability to use the infrared saunas.

3. FIND A COMFORTABLE TEMPERATURE

Your sauna will be preheated and you begin your session when the sauna reaches 100°F. The optimal sauna experience occurs between 100° and 130°F. If you find this is beyond your comfort zone please let use know, we will gladly adjust the temperature and make a note for any future sauna sessions you have.

4. TAKE TIME TO COOL OFF

After each sauna detoxification session, dry off with a towel. Towels will be provided however we highly encourage you to bring your own if you feel more comfortable. It is best to let your body cool off naturally in order to still burn calories after your session. Relax with a cool drink of water and you are ready to take on the day. * Please note, showers are not available so keep this in mind when booking the time of your appointment.
